JI Chief Demands Subsidies to Avert Food Crisis Amid Floods
GUJRAT/ Mandi Bahauddin: Sep 08–Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has warned of severe inflation, food shortages, and an agricultural crisis in the wake of the ongoing floods, urging the government to announce subsidies on food items, fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides.
Speaking to flood victims, volunteers of JI and Alkhidmat Foundation, and media representatives in Gujrat and Phalia (Mandi Bahauddin), Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman criticized the government for spending public money on personal publicity while failing to ensure basic necessities at affordable rates. He called for immediate measures to prevent food scarcity.
The JI chief said floodwaters were now moving towards southern Punjab and Sindh after wreaking havoc in the north and east of the province. He said the government lacked any concrete climate strategy and failed to effectively present Pakistan’s case internationally. He said devastation is result of combination of Indian water aggression and the negligence of Pakistani rulers.
Rehman condemned land encroachments and deforestation, calling those involved mafias protected by successive governments. He said rulers cannot absolve themselves by terming the disaster a natural calamity, as mismanagement and corruption had worsened the crisis.
Criticizing urban flooding, he said governments had ignored collapsing sewerage systems for decades. He lashed out at the PPP and MQM for failing Karachi, noting that even after years of power, basic water supply issues remain unresolved.
He said the political elite turned disasters into photo-ops while victims languish without relief.
The JI, he said, is not playing politics or electioneering in the name of flood victims, but it is a struggle for humanity and the will of God.
Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman urged the public, especially youth, to prepare for a major gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan on November 21, which he described as the launch of a movement for systemic change.
