Mansehra Aug 04: Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has said that the government is using controversial judicial rulings as a tool to target political opponents, demanding release of all political prisoners.
Addressing a press conference in Qalandarabad, Mansehra on Monday, Rehman highlighted the dire state of education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stating that over 5.5 million children in the province are out of school. He criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for failing to reform the education system during its 14-year rule in the province.
He said both the ruling and opposition parties were vying for the approval of the establishment, while mafias continue to enjoy government patronage. "The country needs a new system," he said, emphasizing that Jamaat-e-Islami stands for systemic change and genuine struggle for people's rights, while other parties pursue narrow self-interest.
Responding to a question, Rehman called the current electricity tariff regime "oppressive" and said the system must be dismantled. He lambasted the sugar and IPP (Independent Power Producer) mafias, saying they were pushing the country toward economic ruin while filling their own coffers.
Commenting on Karachi's situation, he said Jamaat-e-Islami had emerged as the largest party in the local government elections, yet the city was handed over to the PPP through political manipulation. “Had Jamaat-e-Islami’s mandate been respected, Karachi would have seen a different reality,” he stated. He also revealed that he directly spoke to the Prime Minister regarding the Foreign Minister’s controversial remarks on Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, following which Ishaq Dar was forced to clarify his statement.
The JI leader strongly opposed internal military operations, saying, “There was no terrorism in Pakistan before 2001. General Musharraf’s policies pushed the country into conflict.” He urged the establishment to acknowledge its role in the crisis. He added that Jamaat-e-Islami has formed a peace jirga in Bajaur, bringing together political forces to prevent further military action that could endanger innocent lives.
Rehman reaffirmed Jamaat-e-Islami’s commitment to peace, development, and prosperity across Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the entire country, announcing a major power show in Lahore this November. "Without public participation, the dream of peace and progress cannot be realized," he said.
He also announced support for the Hazara Movement, urging the government to accept all legitimate demands of the movement’s supporters.
