KARACHI: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Pakistan Ameer Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman on Monday night inaugurated a public park, paver-block roads and a model neighbourhood in Gulistan Rafi area in Malir, saying the party's elected local government representatives were fulfilling their commitment to serve the public beyond the powers formally available to them.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by JI Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar, JI Airport district chief Mohammad Ashraf, Sindh Assembly member Mohammad Farooq, Vice Town Chairman Faisal Basit and the party's information secretary Zahid Askari.
Naeemur Rehman received a warm welcome from residents upon his arrival in Gulistan Rafi, who thanked JI representatives for carrying out development works in the area.
Addressing the gathering, Naeemur Rehman said the party had promised to work beyond what it is tasked in local government and was honouring that commitment. He said development work was continuing honestly in Karachi's towns and union councils where Jamaat-i-Islami held elected offices.
He said a project to develop 1,000 streets in Model Town had already been launched.
Referring to civic services, he said the repair of sewerage lines and the supply of potable water were the responsibility of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, but criticised the performance of the city's administration, saying little could be expected from institutions that were not functioning effectively.
He said the simultaneous inauguration of the model neighbourhood, park and roads reflected the party's continued commitment to public service. He urged people across the country to support JI, saying such backing would help "free the country from land grabbers and vested interests."
He also invited people from across Pakistan to visit Karachi's JI-administered towns to witness the party's development work, adding that Jamaat-i-Islami sought to extend the same model of public service nationwide.
The JI chief also criticised the repeated increases in petroleum prices, describing them as an unjust burden on the public.
