JI Emir Warns of Nationwide Road Blockades Over Fuel Prices
BAHAWALNAGAR, July 9: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman on Thursday warned of nationwide road blockades if the government failed to reduce petrol prices to Rs225 per litre, abolish the petroleum levy and free the public from the IPP mafia, saying the country could never witness real change as long as politics remained in the hands of turncoats and extortionists.
Addressing the public gathering held at the conclusion of the Jamaat-e-Islami's "Haq Do Bahawalnagar Ko" march, Rehman said the country's prevailing political and governance system had pushed Pakistan towards destruction. The rally was also addressed by JI Punjab South Emir Syed Zeeshan Akhtar and district emir Arslan Khakwani.
Criticising the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, JI cheif said it was ironic that while the PTI founder remained in jail, the party's lawmakers had passed a bill granting themselves extensive privileges instead of focusing on public welfare.
Criticising the Punjab government, he said governance in the province had collapsed, adding that nearly 10 million children remained out of school, around 25,000 public schools were being outsourced, agriculture had been devastated and poverty had increased by 41 percent over the past six years. He also criticised Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, saying that her government had purchased an aircraft worth Rs11 billion while basic public services continued to deteriorate.
The JI chief said those brought to power through Form-47 had proved to be the worst rulers and urged the public to launch a broad democratic struggle to remove them. He also announced that the party would contest local government elections across Punjab and field candidates in every union council, adding that it would not allow the provincial government to delay the polls.
Rehman praised Arslan Khakwani and his team for completing a 500-kilometre march in extreme heat, describing it as a historic campaign undertaken not for personal gain but for the rights of Bahawalnagar's youth, women, children and deprived communities. He announced full support for the demands of the "Haq Do Bahawalnagar Ko" movement.
He maintained that the same political elite had ruled Pakistan for the past 78 years under different party banners and failed to resolve the people's problems. Calling the province's development limited to advertisements, he questioned why Punjab's education and healthcare sectors remained in poor condition despite the Sharif family's decades in power, reiterating Jamaat-e-Islami's demand for free, quality education, healthcare and other basic services for all citizens.
