JI Emir demands major cut in petrol prices, announces nationwide protests on Friday

LAHORE: June 17: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has announced nationwide protests on Friday, June 19, demanding a significant reduction in petroleum prices.
In a video message from Mansoorah and a statement posted on X, Rehman called on the government to immediately bring the petrol price down to Rs225 per litre and freeze it for the next three years.
He said petroleum prices are declining globally, while the international oil market is witnessing a further downward trend following the Iran-US agreement. Under these circumstances, he said, the Pakistani public should also be provided immediate relief.
“The issue cannot be resolved with a reduction of just Rs10 or Rs20 in petrol prices. The government must reduce the price by around Rs150 per litre and bring it down to Rs225,” he added.
The JI chief said expensive fuel has badly affected Pakistan’s economy, while the poor, middle class, students, labourers, farmers and bike riders are facing severe difficulties. He said that the government was targeting the same sections of society to collect taxes and cover up its failures.
“Students who have no taxable income are being forced to pay taxes through petrol prices. A motorcycle rider earning Rs40,000 to Rs50,000 per month is also paying heavy taxes on every litre of fuel. This is injustice,” Rehman said.
He said that the government was collecting around Rs150 per litre in taxes, including petroleum levy, from consumers. He added that Rs1,700 billion had been collected through petroleum levy during the previous fiscal year, arguing that the burden was being shifted onto ordinary citizens, workers, farmers and the middle class.
The JI leader criticised the government for not reducing official expenditures and instead placing additional financial pressure on the public. He demanded an immediate reduction or withdrawal of the petroleum levy and called for cuts in electricity and gas prices as well.
Announcing the protest campaign, he said Jamaat-e-Islami would hold demonstrations against inflation and high petroleum prices at all district headquarters across the country on Friday, June 19.
He appealed to JI workers, youth and citizens to participate in the protests in large numbers and put pressure on the government to provide relief. He warned that if the government failed to respond, Jamaat-e-Islami would announce prolonged sit-ins at the provincial headquarters.
Rehman said the time had come for decisive action, adding that the government must end the policy of shifting the burden onto the public so that the economy could move forward, industries could grow and ordinary citizens could get relief.
