‘End exploitation at home’: JI Chief links global image to domestic justice

Gujranwala/Lahore, April 10: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman on Friday demanded an immediate reduction in petroleum prices and urged the government to ensure justice for citizens, saying global appreciation of Pakistan must be matched with fairness at home.
Addressing a public committee convention in Gujranwala, he said the country could not progress under a system dominated by feudal elites, bureaucratic control, and what he termed compromised judicial practices. “If Pakistan is being praised internationally, then oppression and exploitation within the country must end,” he asserted.
He called for an immediate cut in petrol and diesel prices, adding that the common man was burdened with heavy taxation on fuel. He reiterated that his party would continue its struggle for public rights and vowed that Jamaat-e-Islami would emerge as a major political force in Punjab.
JI Vice Emirs Liaqat Baloch, Dr Usama Razi and others also addressed the gathering.
The JI chief announced the launch of a nationwide public outreach and membership drive from April 25, under which public committees would be formed in every village and neighborhood. He said the party would contest all seats in future local government elections and continue its struggle for empowered local bodies across provinces.
Criticising governance in Punjab, Rehman said that millions of children were out of school while farmers were facing severe hardships. He said that the ruling elite continued to enjoy luxuries at the expense of the public, adding that ordinary citizens were paying significant taxes on every litre of fuel. He also raised concerns over independent power producers (IPPs), saying they were receiving billions despite not generating electricity.
Speaking earlier at a Friday congregation at Mansoorah in Lahore, he said only an Islamic system based on justice could resolve the country’s issues. He maintained that movements striving for justice often face resistance from entrenched elites.
Commenting on global affairs, Rehman criticised US President Donald Trump, alleging that his policies had fueled instability. He said the United States and Israel were attempting regime change in Iran, but said Iranian unity had thwarted such efforts. He warned against attempts to create sectarian divisions within the Muslim world, calling for unity against external pressures.
Rehman reiterated that Jamaat-e-Islami sought to liberate people from systems of exploitation and promote a just and equitable society.
