Pakistan’s Regional Role Highlights Need for Peace with Afghanistan: Hafiz Naeemur Rehman

Lahore, April 9 — Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has said that Pakistan’s growing recognition at the global level following its role in the region has further underscored the importance of lasting peace with Afghanistan.
Addressing a meeting of the party’s political committee at Mansoorah, chaired by Liaquat Baloch, he noted that Pakistan has received international appreciation after the temporary ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States–Israel bloc. However, he stressed that political stability at home is essential to effectively capitalize on this global goodwill.
Rehman urged the government and state institutions to prioritize peace with Afghanistan, saying Pakistan’s regional role has made this objective even more critical.
The JI chief also announced a nationwide membership drive from April 25 to May 10 and directed party leaders to establish public committees across the country. He emphasized reorganizing the protest movement for an effective and empowered local government system in Punjab and called for preparing lists of JI’s potential candidates for upcoming local body elections.
Highlighting economic challenges, he said the energy crisis in Pakistan is worsening, with sharp increases in petroleum and electricity prices placing an unbearable burden on the public. He demanded an immediate reduction in fuel and power tariffs, abolition of the petroleum levy, and termination of costly agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
He further criticized the plight of small farmers in Punjab, urging the government to ensure wheat procurement in line with farmers’ demands. He also pointed to the rising costs of agricultural inputs, including pesticides, fertilizers, and seeds, and termed the provincial government’s performance as largely limited to advertisements.
Commenting on other provinces, the JI Emir said the people of Sindh must be freed from feudal dominance and an imposed mayor in Karachi. He reiterated that Jamaat-e-Islami would continue its movement for public rights in the province.
He also stressed the need for peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, urging federal and provincial governments to work with all stakeholders to ensure stability and safeguard citizens’ rights.
On the international front, Rehman said that the United States and Israel had faced setbacks not only in Gaza but also in Iran. He called on the international community to ensure implementation of the two-week ceasefire agreement and to stop Israeli strikes on Lebanon. He added that despite US efforts, regime change in Iran failed due to the government’s strong roots among its people.
