Jamaat-e-Islami rejects Punjab’s new local government act, announces protest campaign
LAHORE, Nov 30, 2025: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has rejected the Punjab government’s newly introduced local government act, declaring that the party will launch a province-wide movement against it.
Addressing a breakfast ceremony held in honour of the workers who served at the party’s recent public gathering, JI Pakistan’s Vice Amir and Nazim-e-Ijtima Liaqat Baloch, JI Lahore Amir Ziauddin Ansari, and JI Lahore West Amir Ali Ertiza Hasni said the successful organisation of the event was the result of the workers’ tireless efforts. They commended the workers of Lahore West district for their dedicated role in the preparations and arrangements of the gathering.
Responding to media queries regarding the new local government act, Baloch said Jamaat-e-Islami “completely rejects” the legislation, claiming that it transfers powers from elected representatives to the bureaucracy, which he termed contrary to democratic principles. He added that the party seeks to empower local bodies and is preparing the public for “real systemic change.”
“Our workers have demonstrated their ability to bring about positive and lasting change in the country,” Baloch said, urging party members to begin organised mobilisation at the street and neighbourhood levels in preparation for upcoming local government elections. “Granting excessive authority to the bureaucracy through this act is an insult to the public mandate,” he added.
The ceremony was attended by JI West Lahore Vice Amir Syed Rashid Dawood Bukhari, Al-Khidmat Foundation President Tariq Chattha, and a large number of workers. Host Bilal Riaz extended gratitude to all guests and participants.
