Jamaat-e-Islami, Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Aain Pakistan Hold Talks on Constitution, Democracy

Islamabad: 16-Dec: A delegation of the Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Aain Pakistan held a meeting with the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan in Islamabad, during which the country’s political, constitutional and economic situation was discussed in detail. The delegation invited Jamaat-e-Islami to participate in a national conference of opposition parties scheduled for December 20–21 in Islamabad.
The Jamaat-e-Islami delegation was led by Vice Emir Liaqat Baloch and included Vice Emir Mian Muhammad Aslam, Emir Islamabad Nasrullah Randhawa, and Secretary General Zubair Safdar. The visiting delegation comprised PTI leader and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar and Taimur Jhagra.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Liaqat Baloch said that the PPP and PML-N were facilitating actions against the Constitution, adding that democracy had been effectively suspended in the country and citizens were being deprived of their fundamental rights. He said the current hybrid system had failed, while selected representatives were being used to push through unconstitutional amendments. He warned that worsening economic conditions and growing political instability were pushing the country towards a dead end.
Baloch also expressed concern over rising tensions with Afghanistan, saying strained relations were not in the interest of either country and that all issues should be resolved through dialogue. He stressed that instability in the region was increasing and urged Afghanistan to ensure its territory is not used against any other country.
Asad Qaiser said that Jamaat-e-Islami was a democratic party and that there was consensus that democracy was not functioning in the country. He emphasized that in the prevailing crisis, it was essential for all democratic forces and national leadership to sit together and agree on a joint course of action. He added that the December 20–21 national conference was being convened to build political consensus, and expressed the hope that Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman would personally attend the conference.
