In 1963, during Jamaat-e-Islami’s Lahore congregation, firing broke out while Ameer-e-Jamaat Maulana Syed Abul A‘la Maududi was addressing the gathering. JI worker Allah Bakhsh was martyred when he tried to confront the gunmen. As people urged Maulana Maududi to sit down and take cover, he responded with words that became part of Jamaat’s political memory: "If I sit down, who will remain standing?” Decades later, that question still carries weight. As the movement against the petroleum levy now moves towards its Islamabad phase on 20 September, the test again is one of discipline, peaceful resistance, and remaining firm on a public demand even when pressure increases. Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has called for PTI’s concerns regarding Imran Khan’s health, access to party leaders, and the cases of arrested women to be addressed without delay. Speaking after a meeting with a delegation of Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Aain Pakistan and PTI leaders in Islamabad, Hafiz Naeem said Imran Khan’s party leadership should be allowed to meet him and that concerns regarding his health should be addressed. He also called for appropriate medical facilities and legal relief for detained women and other political leaders facing health issues. Hafiz Naeem also urged the government and PTI to pursue meaningful negotiations, saying political issues should be resolved through dialogue. He reiterated Jamaat-e-Islami’s opposition to any move to impose emergency or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
