Munawar flays PPP highhandedness with Arbab

LAHORE, Apr 8: Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Syed Munawar Hasan has said that torture of former Sindh chief minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim by PPP workers and tarnished the image of the House with hullabaloo was an insult to democracy and an eye opener for both treasury and the opposition.

In a statement on Tuesday, Munawar said the incident was highly condemnable. He said the country is faced with serious crises at present that needed national solidarity and strong democratic attitudes instead of further chaos and violence.

He said people had pinned high hopes with the new government to eradicate the dictatorship of Gen Musharraf and restore complete democracy by reinstating the sacked judges and rejecting other unconstitutional measures he had taken during the last eight years including release of national hero Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan and ridding the country of American slavery. However, he said, it was unfortunate that statements of ruling parties' leaders and minister have created more frustration among the masses and they feared the new rulers are gradually violating their election promises. He particularly mentioned the rumors that Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhri will be forced retired immediately after ceremoniously restored through a constitutional amendment, besides the excuses given for the release of Dr Qadeer Khan and signals given for coexistence with Gen Musharraf as president.

He said masses will never be satisfied with the complete and unconditional restoration of chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhri and other judges. He said scarcity of power, atta and other edibles, while continued price hike of petrol have caused serious concerns among the masses. Whereas, the rulers are announcing to continue with the policies of Gen Musharraf instead of providing relief to the masses, and to continue with the American war on terror instead of making a negotiated settlement with the militants in tribal areas.
