New government should commit itself to Musharraf ouster

LAHORE, Feb 22: Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Syed Munawar Hasan has said that the first task of new assembly and its leaderships is to force Gen Musharraf to resign from his illegal presidency and restore all the sacked judges including chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhri.

He was delivering Friday sermon at Mansoorah mosque, says a press release by JI media cell. Munawar Hasan said the recent elections were a referendum against Gen Musharraf and masses have rejected his policies of extremism, implementing Western agenda, and anti-Muslim domestic and foreign policies. He said Gen Musharraf visited many cities and begged the people for voting for his political chums but masses rejected them with a shameful refusal. Now Musharraf has only one choice, and that is to resign to save his honorably otherwise people will throw him out of power, he said.

He said JI boycotted elections on principled stance and we still demand that all the sacked judges including Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhri should be restored and constitution should be restored to the position of Oct 12, 99. Munawar also urged upon the parties in the parliament that they must forge unity and collaboration among them so as to restore the supremacy of the parliament and rid the nation of an individual's dictatorship. He said the recent elections were rigged pre-polled, while several allies of Musharraf regime rigged them on the polling day as well wherever they found a chance to do that. He cited examples of MQM candidates bagging over 150,000 or 175,000 votes, saying Karachi and Hyderabad again suffered from worst rigging since such a large number of votes were impossible could not be polled in one day specially when voters were nowhere to be seen on the polling stations.

He said JI will wait and see if the new government fulfilled all its electoral promises, and if they avoided to restore judges and constitution then APDM will use the national reawakening to launch a movement against the rulers. He said JI welcomes the lawyers long march of March 9 towards Islamabad, said it is necessary to prevent the new rulers from ignoring the core issues.
