Munawar Hasan condemns police torture on lawyers

LAHORE, Feb 21: Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Syed Munawar Hasan has strongly condemned the police baton charge on lawyers' rallies in Karachi and Islamabad on Thursday.

According to a press release issued on Thursday by JI media cell, Syed Munawar Hasan said at a time when elections to national and provincial assemblies have been completed and new civil governments are about to take charge in center and provinces, the police torture on peaceful lawyers on the behest of caretaker governments whose tenure was left for only a few days is highly condemnable.

Munawar said the actual perpetrator of police torture on lawyers is Gen Pervez Musharraf. He expressed sorrow that Gen Musharraf is still clutching to the power obstinately despite that the nation has given verdict against him in the recent elections and is still issuing threats that he would make 'his own' decision if new government restored judiciary. Munawar asked the parties winning elections that they should take serious notice the threats by Gen Musharraf.

Munawar demanded immediate release of all sacked judges and lawyers including Aitzaz Ahsan. He said now the situation has changed and Gen Musharraf is destined to go very soon. He said Gen Musharraf should read the writings on the wall and resign voluntarily.

He assured lawyers community of full support on behalf of Jamaat Islami and said Jamaat Islami and lawyers community were demanding the same thing and their struggle would continue till removal of Gen Musahrraf from presidency and restoration of judges sacked by him.
