Qazi urges PPP, PML-N to restore constitution, judiciary and remove Musharraf

LAHORE, Feb 20: Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Qazi Hussain Ahmad has advised the leadership of both PML-N and PPPP to collaborate with each other to ensure the supremacy of constitution and parliament, restoration of chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhri and other sacked judges, and the resignation of President Gen Pervez Musharraf, saying these will be historic measures and represent the exact nature of public sentiments.

Qazi was talking to PPPP co-chairperson Asif Ali ZArdari who made a telephonic contact with him on Wedensday evening to discuss the prevailing political situation specially the circumstances following the Feb 18 elections, says a JI spokesman in a press release.

Qazi told Asif Zardari that with their mandate the people of Pakistan have put a heavy responsibility on the shoulders of winning parties under these critical circumstances, and he expects that the leaderships of winning parties will truly represent the public sentiments on various national issues. Qazi made it clear that JI and APDM had boycotted the elections only because of the unconstitutional measures of Nov 3, 07 and wanted their complete reversal. Qazi emphasized that APDM wanted unconditional and complete restoration of all judges sacked by Gen Musharraf including the chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhri, and consider the presidency of Gen Musharraf as unconstitutional and illegal. Qazi said true democracy will only be restored in the country when all state institutions were allowed to function according to the constitution. He said APDM held its objectives and public demands dearer than the parliamentary seats and government offices, and if those public demands were fulfilled APDM will support the new government otherwise it will launch movement for those demands in line with the public sentiments.

Qazi warned that country is passing through a critical phase of crises and only the supremacy of constitution and laws of land, instead of the personalities, could make the future of nation secure, he said.

Later, Qazi Hussain Ahmad called PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif on phone and praised his insistence to the demand of restoration of supreme court judges, besides assuring him total cooperation on this behalf. Qazi reiterated that if PPPP and PML-N made effective collaboration to ensure the supremacy of constitution and parliament, restoration of chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhri and other sacked judges, and the resignation of President Gen Pervez Musharraf, it will be historic measures and represent the exact nature of public sentiments.

Qazi emphasized that APDM's basic demands were the reversal of unconstitutional measures of Nov 3, restoration of supreme court judges and resignation of Gen Musharraf, and the alliance will never give these demands up, nor allowing them to be buried in the power corridors. He warned that if those demands were not fulfilled by the parliament then public struggle will be the only choice left and APDM will use the current wave of public reawakening to achieve those objectives.
