Press Talk of Qazi Hussain Ahmed

Lahore, Dec 28: MMA president and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Qazi Hussain Ahmad has said that Gen Musharraf was not sincere in constructing Kalabagh dam or any other water reservoir but he has raised this issue only to divide opposition parties' unity against his unconstitutional rule and to divert public attention from real issues of price hike, unemployment, rising petrol prices.

Talking to newsmen at Mansoorah on Wednesday, Qazi Hussain Ahmad said military rulers want to change the public issues but MMA will discuss all basic issues in the meeting of joint opposition very soon and decide about launching movement against the government with complete consensus.

Qazi warned that any attempt to solve Kalabagh dam issue on gun point will create serious dangers for the country and increase differences among the provinces. He said now another government ally MQM has opposed the government on the issue. He said MMA's opinion on the issue is that water must not be wasted and reservoirs should be constructed but with complete consensus among the provinces. He said the '91 water accord is still under consensus which determined the share of all provinces. He said it is not necessary that Kalabagh must be built at all costs; any other dam could serve this purpose. But, he said, the military government cannot solve this problem and only political institutions could bring any solution for it. He said constitution provides for the solution among the provinces and council of common interests can discuss this issue.

The MMA leader said expulsion of foreign students from deeni madaris is against the ideological foundations of Pakistan and Islamic practices. He said it was not done even under British colonial rule. He said government measure is an open enmity with Islam and Pakistan, adding that, MMA would resist this move because it is aimed at bringing an end to spreading good will of Pakistan through those foreign students under US pressure.

He said removing the procedure of Namaz from the syllabus is unjustified because it never created any differences as all sects are enjoying total agreement on the basic aspects of Namaz. He said this action is also done to please the US which wanted to control our entire educational and political system. He said US and Nato forces are present on Pakistani soil without taking the nation into confidence. He said General Musharraf denied the presence of US forces but US ambassador confirmed it. He said unless people unanimously put pressure on the government those forces would not return and continued to pose serious threats to country 's security. He said US had prepared a roadmap of taking control of entire middle east and Asian region and for that it is making military intervention anywhere it has a chance.

To a question, Qazi said the remains of martial law should not continue in power after 2006 but our movement will not target Musharraf only but it will be against military intervention in politics because generals have destroyed political institutions. He said nation will not accept any military general as ruler in future.
